Piper - Studio Mascot

Piper - a person who plays on a pipe.

(Dictionary.com. Web. 13 May 2020. <https://www.dictionary.com/browse/piper?s=t>)

Pipe - a general name for any hollow cylinder or cone in which air vibrates and produces a sound. (Maclagan, A Dictionary for the Modern Flutist. Scarecrow Press, Inc. 2009.)

Pipe  - (i) ( Ger. Pfeife ) (1) Generic term for a tube, open or stopped, of wood, metal, cane or other material and with or without finger-holes. Pipes are classified as aerophones in the Sachs–Hornbostel system and subdivided according to whether the sound is generated by an ‘air reed’ in which the air itself vibrates, set in motion by the player’s breath (either confined air reeds as with recorders, or free air reeds as with flutes, depending on whether the player’s breath is directed through a rigid channel and against a sharp edge, or not);   (Grove Music Online. Web. 20 January 2001. Howard Mayer Brown. <https://doi.org/10.1093/gmo/9781561592630.article.21804>)

Flute Lessons

Why take lessons with Dr. Connie (Kelley)?

  • She knows what it's like to be a flute player and shares knowledge and experience from a flutists' perspective about band, competition, and even life!

  • She can test your instrument and make recommendations about repair or stepping up, saving years of frustration.

  • She can ensure you develop good fluting habits, again saving time and years of frustration.

  • She is a built-in duet partner and resource for some really cool music!

  • She is a flute specialist and may be the only person you know as passionate as you about playing the flute!

  • She is available to students between lessons as needed for questions, advice, or encouragement.

When should I start flute lessons?

Now!

How to take lessons with Dr. Connie (Kelley)?

If you live in or near San Angelo, TX, the ideal mode for flute lessons is in-person, one-on-one. Read the Studio Policies and complete the Lesson Application to get started! If the trial lesson goes well, the next step is to agree upon a regular lesson schedule. Your skills will improve more quickly and efficiently with regularly occurring lessons throughout the year, including summer!

Where will lessons take place?

It will depend on your selected mode for your lessons; face-to-face or virtual. In-person lessons will take place in a dedicated flute studio located in San Angelo, TX. Virtual lessons...well, I will still be in a dedicated flute studio in San Angelo, TX while you will be in your own space and we will be connected via the internet.

Is there an alternative to in-person lessons?

Yes! I also teach online via Skype. To participate in private lessons via an online format you will need access to a good internet connection, a good camera and sound, a space free from distraction dedicated to your lesson, and a music stand or ingeniously fashioned and stable alternative. Your camera will need to be placed at eye level, far enough away to capture you and all of the flute from the chest up, and placed at an angle to show you playing the flute (not blocked by the music stand or anything else). Read the Studio Policies and complete the Lesson Application to get started!

The Limerick Corner

The Flute Tutor

A tutor who tooted the flute,

Was teaching two tooters to toot,

Said the two to the tutor,

"Is it harder to toot, or

To tutor two tooters to toot?"

by Carolyn Wells

There Was An Old Man With A Flute

There was an Old Man with a flute,
A serpent ran into his boot;
But he played day and night,
Till the serpent took flight,
And avoided that man with a flute.
